"Messages" page

The Messages page is where you can edit all of the parameters of Messages and their trigger conditions, and assign .wav files to be played along with them. All Message parameters except Text are Multi-selectable.
.
Message List

The Message list shows the list of all messages in the mission. They will be numbered from zero to match their index in the "Message # n must be shown" condition. An asterisk before the message shows it has a non-dummy wav name assigned to it in its matching wav .lst file.

Messages will be shown in their specified colors, or ghosted if they are not seen by any Teams.

When you choose the Messages page, the Datapad will automatically display the Message parameters:
Text Can be up to 64 characters in length.
.
Color The color that the message will be displayed in the game. This is usually the same as the IFF of the Team that's supposed to be sending the message.
.
Condition A Quad Condition to trigger the Message being sent.
.
Prevent Condition A Double Condition which, if true, will prevent the Message being sent.
.
Delay The delay, after the trigger Condition becomes true, before the Message is sent.
.
Seen By The list of Teams to which the Message will be displayed. Highlight the Team name to select it. If a message is unseen it will appear ghosted in the Message List.
.

  WAV File Manager

All XWA missions can have a matching wav .lst file which defines the list of .WAV files to be played along with the text messages. This .lst file must have the same name as the mission file, but with a ".lst" extension. For custom missions the .lst file must be in the XWingAlliance\Wave\MissionVoice directory on your hard drive.

If a matching .lst file exists for a mission, it will be loaded automatically by AlliED when you load the mission. When you select a Message from the list which has a matching WAV assigned, the WAV file will be played if the WAV file manager is currently on.

There is a maximum of 64 wavs for custom missions, with another 6 for the Mission Completion messages on the Teams page.

Using the WAV file manager you can easily create WAV .lst files and assign WAVs to your Messages.  As above, Messages have an * before their text in the Message List to indicate that a non-dummy WAV file has been associated to it.

The functions of the WAV manager are:

..
Create Creates a .lst file in your \Wave directory with the same name as your mission (so the mission must be named first.)

When a .lst file is created by AlliED, all entries are set to dummy.wav. If the WAV assigned to a message does not exist, the game will not crash, there will just be no sound played.
.

Save Saves the current state of the WAV file.
.
Clear Sets WAV for current message to dummy.wav.
.
Choose .wav Brings up a Load file dialogue to choose the .WAV to assign to the current message.

The .WAV files you use must be in your \Wave directory or a subdirectory of it. So you can create new folders within the \Wave directory and put your own samples in there.

Unlike XvT, you can use the same wav more than once in a mission.

WAV text selector (see below)
Mission Completion .wavs This changes the message display to show the 6 Mission Completion messages so that wavs can be assigned to them.

  WAV Text Selector

Wav text selector

Select its button in the WAV file manager or double click on the Message list to bring up a text list of almost all of the WAVs included with the game.

The WAVs are separated into different pages for: Tactical Officers, Pilots, Campaign wavs on CD1, Campaign wavs on CD2, and Custom wavs. The options on the right will switch between the voices of different Tactical Officers and Pilots. Because different Pilots say different things for the same wav name, the list shows the text for Pilot 1 & 2, with the variations for other Pilots indented:

Pilot list

To assign a WAV to the current Message, select the one you want then press OK, or double click the list to select and close at the same time.  You can also use the Search feature to search for a piece of text on the current page.

Text files of the lists are required to be in your AlliED directory, these are available on the registered version download page. The CustomWAVs.txt file enables you to add you own wavs if required, or just reorganize the one ones included with the game, as I've done with the default CustomWAVs file. The format for these files are:

[wav name] [space] [IFF number] [space] [text of message

The wav name must NOT have the .wav extension, and must include the path from XWA's Wave directory to the wav. The text will be displayed in the IFF color:

0 = green
1 or 4 = red
2 = blue
3 = yellow
5 = purple.
A line beginning with a space will be displayed as is, in white font.

NOTE: XWA searches for wavs in the XWingAlliance\Wave directory, first on your hard drive then, if it doesn't find it there, on the CD. So your wavs MUST be put into the \Wave directory on your harddrive, or a subdirectory of it e.g. WingAlliance\Wave\MyWavs.

E.g:
if you have a wav called StopShuttle.wav in the \Wave directory, which is a Rebel voice saying "Stop the Shuttle!" then add to the CustomWAVs.txt file the line:
StopShuttle 0 Stop the Shuttle!

If that wav is in the subdirectory \MyWavs you will need to add:
MyWavs\StopShuttle 0 Stop the Shuttle!

It will appear in the Wav selector as:
Stop the Shuttle!

You will then be able to assign it to messages from the Wave file selector in the same way as wavs from the CD.
