X-ED Overview

X-ED is a "spin off" from my XvT editor XvtED and as such, has a lot in common with it. This manual is also a conversion from XvtED's so some screenshots may differ from X-ED. All of the tool buttons in X-ED have floating hints so if you are unsure of a button's function, hold the mouse cursor over it to see the hint.

X-ED can be assigned to .xwi file types so that double clicking on an .xwi file will open the editor with the selected file loaded.

When loading a mission file a backup of it (Backup.xwi) will be made, so if you mess something up while editing it you can load Backup.xwi to get back the original. Remember, the backup file will be overwritten each time you load a new mission file.

X-Wing Files

Each mission for X-Wing requires 2 files with the same name but different extensions:
  • .xwi file containing the mission information, consisting of Flight Groups, Objects and Mission parameters
  • .brf file containing the Briefing information
Flight Groups and Objects are the most important parts of a mission, and are both edited on the "FGs" page:
Flight Groups (FGs) These are the craft (including Containers) that will appear in the mission.
There is a maximum of 16 Flight Groups in a mission.

At least one of these FGs must have a mission critical objective, which must be completed in order to succeed in the mission.

Objects Unlike XvT, Objects are not FGs, but have a different data structure. They Include satellites, probes, buoys, mines, asteroids and images of planets.

Objects may also have the objective of being destroyed in order to succeed in the mission.

"Mission" page

Parameters found on the "Mission" page relate to the overall mission:
Completion Messages These are the text messages that will be displayed when the player completes the mission objectives.
.
Mission Time Limit This is the amount of time the Player has to complete the mission objectives before failing the mission. If set to zero, there is no time limit.
.
Mission Location Determines whether the mission is played in open space or above the Death Star surface.
.
Other These options change depending on the Mission Location. The first two options select whether a pilot is rescued or captured if they eject, unless it is a Death Star mission, when the second option is a mission objective to Clear Laser Towers. The last option is also for Death Star missions to set a mission objective to Hit Exhaust Port. (The numbered options are unknowns and have never been used in official missions.)
